About the MMCC

PURPOSE

The purpose of our Club, founded in 1933, is to share our love of photography and to improve our skills and artistry.

MEETINGS (See 2008-2009 Activities Schedule)

Our meetings are held in the Gallery of the Community Church of New York, located at 28 East 35th Street in Manhattan. We meet twice a month from September through May, typically the first and third Monday. Meetings begin promptly at 6:30 PM, but on competition nights entries must be submitted by 6:15 PM.

The first meeting of the month is Competition Night, when we invite experienced and respected photographers to judge, critique, and score our work. Entries are judged on impact, composition, and technique. Judges' comments are intended to encourage and improve the skills of our members.

Records of scores are kept and cumulated during each season, and those with the highest scores are recognized at the Annual Awards Dinner in June.

At this first meeting of the month each member may submit two entries in one or more of the following categories during the nine regular competitions.

  • Slides. Includes both color and monochrome slides
  • Prints. Includes all kinds of prints: darkroom, digital, and commercial
  • Digital Imaging. Projected digital images

The second meeting of the month is Program Night. A program might consist of a travelogue, a how-to on an artistic or technical subject, a workshop with demonstrations of techniques like cropping or spot toning, or a set-up for members to shoot with their own cameras. We also offer an informal critique, when experienced members are invited to assess the work of fellow members, helping them improve their work.

SPECIAL COMPETITIONS

In addition to the regular competitions, we have four types of special competitions each year:

  • Eleanor Katz Competitions (named in honor of a longtime member who contributed much to the Club). There are three of these theme competitions spaced out during the year, each held along with a regular competition, judged by the same judge, but scored separately. The themes are announced in advance, e.g., workers, motion, water.
  • Best-of-the-Year Competition. Each member may submit four slides , prints, and digital images he/she entered in each category during the regular competitions of the year. The winners, the Best of the Best, receive awards during the Annual Awards Dinner in June.
  • Field Trip Competition. Through the year, we have field trips in and out of New York City to stimulate members photographically. At the end of the year, members compete for the best prints, slides, and digital images resulting from the trips. Winners are shown at the Annual Awards Dinner.

OFFICERS AND BOARD

The Club is governed by a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer, as well as a Board of Directors. Elections are held annually; each serves a two-year term. The full Board (Officers and Directors) meets four times a year to conduct Club business and make policy decisions.

NEWSLETTER

Our Club publishes a newsletter, Manhattan Focus, each month from September through June. It keeps members informed of current Club activities, provides news about members and competition scores, and includes a calendar of photographic activities.

DINNERS

We hold two dinners each year. Members may bring family and friends to both.

Holiday Dinner, in mid-December. A slide show is provided for entertainment.

Annual Awards Dinner, on the first or second Saturday in June. Our most important social event, this party ends the club season. The awards earned during the year are presented, and a special slide show ends the evening.

COMMITTEES

Without the work of our committees, there would be no Club. We ask prospective members to consider what committees with which they will help.

In Conclusion

We have presented a brief outline of what our Club offers you. We hope you will join and participate fully, attending both competition and program night meetings each month and becoming active on a committee or two. You will benefit and enjoy your membership most by participating.
